Up until now, I’ve never had a reason to have a business card. That’s because 99.9% of my business was done via the web and most clients/partners I never did or never would meet face-to-face. Yet, that’s about to change.
I’m attending a very important conference this weekend – with people for whom I have great admiration and respect. You always want to make a good impression on folks you just meet. Dan Morris – one of the conference forum moderators – prepared a short handbook about what to expect this conference. And there it was – on page 10 – BRING YOUR BUSINESS CARDS!
As I looked at the writings of fellow conference attendees on our forum, I realized that I was the lemon in the middle of a beautiful apple orchard. I didn’t really exist. I had no nifty tag line below my signature, the only web site I have that is not promoting a product/service is the one you’re looking at now (and it’s just a throw-together), and I was nowhere near prepared to meet and mingle with these people.
Because I had just changed my professional identity – going from a “writer” (who does a variety of things) to a more streamlined and focused consultant - I had to start from ground zero. So in less than 4 days, I must create my branding, build a web site, write the content, and get some business cards – all to establish my new business persona.
There are two places we generally do most of our best thinking: mine was in bed last night. I was awake until 2am this morning envisioning my this new identity in my head. And here I am – Miss “Graphically Challenged” with very little money – wondering how I’m going to make this happen.
Hopefully someone magical will appear out of the sky to help me with this. (Yes – I do believe that you must ask the Universe for what you want.)
Wish me luck!
